Toronto’s very own The Weeknd has been making music since dropping tunes on YouTube in 2009 and co-founded the XO music label in 2011 and as they say the rest is history with hit after hit after hit including the Z1035 2015 Song of Year “Can’t Feel My Face” and 2020 Song of The Year “Blinding Lights” plus “The Hills” “Earned It” “Starboy” ‘Sacrifice’ “Save Your Tears” “Take My Breath” “Less Than Zero” “Die For You” and many more.
The Weeknd has won 4 Grammy Awards, 20 Billboard Music Awards, 22 Juno Awards, 6 American Music Awards, 2 MTV Video Music Awards, a Latin Grammy Award, and nominations for an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.
With all his success and accolades and awards The Weeknd said ready to close a chapter in his music career. Perhaps a name change or rebrand like Kanye West to YE or Prince to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince of Puff Daddy to P Diddy to Diddy!
In an interview for W magazine 33 year old ABEL TESFAYE said “I’m going through a cathartic path right now. It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
The Weeknd posted images of the cover of “W The Pop Issue” along with Lilly-Rose Depp on his Instagram page. Abel and Lily are the main stars of “The Idol” which will debut on MAX (Formerly HBO Max) on Sunday June 4th.
In interviews during April 2022 The Weeknd also mentioned his desire to move away from “The Weeknd.” It seems now he is even closer to ending this chapter but didn’t divulge any further details or an exact timeline and plans to “kill” his persona.
Abel said “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
