Here are the biggest shocks of the night (other than Will Smith smacking Chris Rock).
Surprise: “Coda” wins Best Picture
While “Coda” gained a huge viewership, its ultimate win for Best Picture over “Dune” and “King Richard” plus more. See complete winners list here. What’s most surprising was that the Apple TV+ series had won over the Netflix original “The Power of the Dog” and “Don’t Look Up” considering how much the streaming platform had spent on both productions. Nonetheless, it was the sweet “Coda” that took home the gold.
Snub: Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Original Song
If Lin-Manuel Miranda had won last night’s Best Original Song for “Encanto,” it would put him a a space away from the EGOT, which stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. It would have been a great opportunity and considering Disney films are historically known for having a high winning rate in this category it came as a shock to everyone that he did not win. Instead, Billie Eilish and brother Finneas won with 007 theme song “No Time to Die.”
Snub: “The Power of the Dog” only wins 1 Oscar
Going into the Oscars, “The Power of the Dog” had the most nominated movie of the year with 12 nominations but only brought home one and was also the frontrunner for Best Picture. While that didn’t happen, there were other categories that the movie could have easily scored a win in. The one award the filmed picked up was Jane Campion’s well deserved Best Director award.
Surprise: Jessica Chastain wins Best Actress
This didn’t come as a huge shock, considering that Chastain’s previous SAG award, but her work in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” was far from a sure thing. There was word about Penelope Crus for her work in “Parallel Mothers,” but it was Jessica Chastain in the end over Kristen Stewart, Nicole Kidman and Olivia Colman.
