THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN: FORD MORE YEARS!
Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford won his second straight Majority with an impressive 83 of 124 seats. It’s the first time the PCs have won BACK to BACK Majorities since Mike Harris in 1995 and 1999. Ford won his riding in Etobicoke North. The PCs will send 83 MPPs to Queen’s Park, winning about 40.8% of the popular vote share with roughly 414,000 fewer total votes than in 2018.
CTV NEWS TORONTO captured the reaction when Doug Ford and his family heard the news that his Progressive Conservatives won the 2022 Ontario Election.
Doug Ford gave his supporters an inspiring victory speech and said “WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED…..THIS IS OUR TIME, OUR MOMENT and OUR PROVINCE!
Ford also said at the Toronto Congress in Etobicoke “If you’re a miner in the north who’s out of work, I want you to know we’re building that road to the ring of fire. If you had to worry about your job at the local auto plant, I want you to know we’re investing in the future of Ontario’s auto sector. If you’re a student who wants to work in the tech sector, we will have a job waiting for you.”
The NDP will continue as the official opposition with 31 seats, while the Liberals with 8, Green with 1 and Independent with 1 seat. Andrea Horwath announced she is stepping down after 13 years as party leader. She won her riding in Hamilton Centre which she has held since 2004. Horwath said after the election “I’m going to keep doing that, but tonight, it’s time for me to pass the torch, to pass the baton, to hand off the leadership of the NDP. It makes me sad, but it makes me happy because our team is so strong. Together, my friends, we have built a party that is stronger and more ready to govern than ever before.”
Steven Del Duca lost to Michael Tibollo in Vaughan Woodbridge and is stepping down as party leader with a leadership selection coming soon. The former Wynne government minister was elected to lead the party days before the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Del Duca said after the election “This isn’t the outcome that we had hoped for, and work hard for.”
The Liberals won 8 seats, Mike Schreiner won in Guelph and is the first Green MPP to be re-elected in Ontario History.
Voter turnout at the polls was the lowest ever in the province with a reported 43% down from 58% in 2018, 52% in 2014 and 48 in 2011.
