Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn want you to know that what the world needs now is… LOVE!
Warner Bros dropped the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 hit movie that made 1.079 Billion at the Box Office.
Joaquin Phoenix returns to his role as Arthur Fleck and co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Steve Coogan, Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Catherine Keener (Incredibles 2) and Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) are also feature in JOKER “FAD”
The trailer is about mad people — in love. Phoenix is seen taking the stage and performing in a nightclub.
The footage is set against the song “What the World Needs Now (Is Love Sweet Love).” It’s a cover an a 1965 hit from Jackie DeShannon written by Burt Bacherach and Hal David.
Gaga and Phoenix run through the Manhattan streets and dream of dancing clad in elegance against a moonlit sky.
The trailer ends with Harley visiting Joker in jail — or Arkham Asylum.
Not much info has been revealed about the actual plot of the sequel but appears to be a jukebox musical. Variety previously reported it’s “mostly a jukebox musical” that integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known songs” and could contain one or two original soundtrack songs as well. The film is expected to “break the mold of traditional musicals.”
Director Todd Phillips says the categorization isn’t entirely accurate but it will feature plenty of song and dance numbers.
The film will hit theaters on October 4.
