This is not a “HAHAHA” moment in Canadian Comedy!
Sadly The Just For Laughs Festival is cancelled in 2024 due to restructuring.
In a statement from Groupe Juste pour rire inc. (JPR) The festival will not go ahead this year but that “hopes” the festival will return in 2025.
A few days ago the comedy festival in Montreal was also cancelled seeking protection from its creditors as it begins formal restructuring under Canada’s Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. The company said it plans to continue operations “in a scaled-down format” in Montreal.
JPR laid off 75 employees, roughly 70 per cent of its workforce.
Juste pour rire blamed its financial problems on the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and the changing entertainment industry. Court records show a bailiff seized more than $800,000 in assets from the company last week after it failed to make a court-ordered payment to a former employee.
This news is devastating for comedians and fans. Laughter is essential in all our lives and we hope the restructuring works and JFL Festival returns in 2025.
