25 year old Aspiring Singer Emaza Gibson has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against 34 year old Jason Derulo, alleging that he promised her a record deal but later demanded sexual favors in exchange for advancing her career.
Gibson, who moved to Los Angeles in 2008 with her sisters Saiyr and Znuie to pursue a music career as the group Ceraadi, shared her experience with NBC. Despite her sisters stepping away from from the music industry Gibson continue to pursu a solo career.
The lawsuit claims that Derulo terminated their deal after she refused his advances and declined invitations for outings and alcohol. Gibson has accused him of quid pro quo sexual harassment, leaving her traumatized and anxious due to the inhumane work situations she faced.
She told NBC ‘I’m at this point in my life right now, it’s very heartbreaking. I have anxiety; I’m traumatized. I’ve dealt with inhumane work situations. I’m at this point where I’m back to zero and I have nothing.”
The Iowa-born Gibson alleges Derulo dumped her record deal after she rejected his invitations to go for drinks. She accuses him of demanding ‘sex in exchange for success’.
According to the legal documents, Derulo approached Gibson in August 2021 to be part of a collaboration involving his music imprint, Future History, and Atlantic Records. The contract specified her involvement in a single featuring Derulo, along with the production of a mixtape within four months and an album within six.
Gibson alleged seven complaints against the defendants including quid pro quo sexual harassment, sexual harassment, failure to prevent and/or remedy harassment, retaliation, intimidation and violence, breach of contract and breach of good faith.
Jason Derulo replied to the allegations with a video posted on his Instagram “I wouldn’t normally comment but these claims are completely false and hurtful. I stand against all forms of harassment and I remain supportive of anybody following their dreams. I’ve always strived to live my life in a positively impactful way, and that’s why I sit here before you deeply offended, by these defamatory claims. God bless.”
