U2 unveiled a brand new song weeks before their upcoming Las Vegas residency.
On Saturday night, the iconic Irish rockers debuted “Atomic City” during a music video shoot in historic downtown Freemont Street in Las Vegas.
“Atomic City” takes its title from the city of Las Vegas’ nickname during the days of nuclear bomb testing in the 1950s, when tourism spiked both from gambling and the ability to view the tests in the desert outskirts of the city.
The track is expected to be released soon with the launch of U2’s residency show at the Venetian’s Sphere venue.
During Saturday’s video shoot, the Rock N Roll Hall of Famers Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. were on a flatbed truck moving through Fremont Street in downtown Vegas. The location was close to where the band filmed the 1987 video for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”
Bono said he was inspired by “late ’70s post-punk” in the vein of Blondie and the Clash. The lyrics reference Frank Sinatra, being ready for the bright lights and spinning roulette wheels.
U2 will perform more than 20 shows for U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere at the new MSG Sphere at the Venetian that will celebrate the act’s 1991 album, Achtung Baby. The residency starts September 29th until December 16.
U2 will be the first act to perform at the Sphere. 61 year old Larry Mullen will not appear during those shows as he recovers for his surgery. Krezip drummer Bram van den Berg will fill in.
