The iconic Shakira is scheduled to perform for the first time in 17 years at the VMA’s and will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award on Tuesday, September 12 at 8pm live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The Award is presented by MTV for “outstanding contributions” and “profound impact” on music video and popular culture. As the ceremony’s special category, the trophy is a gold-plated “moonman” rather than the silver ones of the other VMA categories.
Previous recipients include Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.
Shakira is already a four-time VMAs winner and is nominated this year for 4 Moon Person trophies including artist of the year, best collaboration (for “XQG,” with Karol G ) and two noms in the best Latin category — for the same Karol G collab, and for her solo single, “Acróstico.”
The VMA’s posted on Instagram “*screams* @SHAKIRA IS OUR 2023 #VMA VIDEO VANGUARD RECIPIENT 💛🏆✨ Celebrate Shakira’s incredible career at music’s most iconic night, Tuesday September 12 on @mtv!”
