Oprah Winfrey and Steven Speilberg have reunited to revive “The Color Purple” into a movie musical directed by Blitz Bazawule.
Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer for “The Color Purple” the musical coming-of-age drama starring Fantasia Barrino who won Season 3 of American Idol in 2004.
The Color Purple is based on the Broadway musical and Alice Walker novel of the same name.
The film centers on the bond between two sisters, Celie and Nettie Harris, who grow up in the South in the early 1900s. Phylicia Mpasi and Barrino play younger and older versions of Celie, with Halle Bailey and Ciara as younger and older versions of Nettie. Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins and H.E.R. also star.
The Color Purple was previously adapted as a 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.
This film is not a remake of the original. It’s an adaptation of the broadway musical much closer to the book than the original movie. The musical and the 1985 film are vastly different.
This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule (“Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo”) and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Harpo Films Production, an Amblin Entertainment Production, a Scott Sanders Production/a QJP Production.
The movie hits theaters on Christmas Day December 25th and internationally on January 18, 2024.
