And Newwwww Number 1!
Sometimes a song hits #1 right away and other times it takes over 6 years and a remix to put it over the top!
Congrats to Toronto’s very own The Weeknd and Ariana Grande who jumped from Number 6 last week with “Die For You” and knocked off Miley Cyrus “Flowers” from the top spot after 6 weeks on The billboard Hot 100.
The Weeknd also has had the highest debut for a musical special in the History of HBO MAX with “The Weeknd Live At Sofi Stadium”
“Die ForYou” first appeared on the StarBoy album in 2016 and released as a single in 2017.
On November 25, 2021, to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of Starboy’s release, the Weeknd surprise-released the music video for “Die for You”, directed by Christian Breslauer. The video pays homage to the science fiction horror television series Stranger Things and the 1982 science fiction film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
On October 4, 2021, an unreleased remix of “Die for You” featuring singer-songwriter SZA premiered on the 18th episode of the Weeknd’s Apple Music 1 radio show Memento Mori, following a streaming surge the song received in September of that year.
Over the past few years the track has resurfaced thanks to tv series and social media and has achieved its greatest success in 2023.
A remix of “Die For You” with Ariana Grande was released on February 24, 2023, as well as a lyric video viewed 23 Million times in 10 days on YouTube. The track is the 4th collaboration between the Weeknd and Grande including “Love Me Harder” (2014), “Off the Table” (2020), and the remix of “Save Your Tears” (2021).
This collaberation marks each artist’s seventh Hot 100 Number 1 and their second together, after “Save Your Tears” in 2021 for two weeks, also after Grande was added on a remixed version.
The new remix of “Die For You” had the largest opening day streams for a remix in Spotify history with 8.9 million streams.
