The 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday night hosted by Jerrod Carmichael on NBC and streamed on Peacock honored the best in film and American television of 2022, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Jerrod is a funny guy and great talent but looked out of place at times on the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel which he referred to as the building that “killed Whitney Houston.” Many fans on social media said he was cringe and lacked class and respect during the show while others said he moved the needle. Carmichael’s opening monologue addressed racial controversies the HFPA has faced and said “I’ll tell you why I’m here, I’m here ’cause I’m Black”
The live tv awards show returned after a year off. NBC opted not to air the 2022 ceremony in the wake of mounting criticism surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The overnight ratings were 5.4 Million and updated to 6.3 Million down from 6.9 Million in 2021 and much lower than pre-pandemic numbers of 18.4 Million with Ricky Gervais in 2020. The Golden Globes attracted 26.8 million viewers in 2004 long before streaming services so there was less competition. That a long with view fatigue and tuning out many awards show for multiple reasons.
According to an article in USA Today the show should have never come back “The Golden Globes came back last night. We were better off without them. Yes, I’m talking about that awards show that’s like the Oscars, only drunker, cruder and crasser. The Globes are like your least favorite uncle at a family Thanksgiving – everyone has to tolerate the show as a part of the Hollywood adulation machine, but they’re also a bit embarrassed by it.

HFPA President Helen Hoehne thanked the industry for its support in celebrating the Globes’ 80th anniversary. Hoehne also alluded to the changes the HFPA has made to improve the diversity of its membership “We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with the worldwide fans who celebrate the best on film and television. We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices and continue to add representation to our organization from around the world as we did this past year.”
Many stars were in attendance but Brendan Frazer chose not to attend. Fraser was nominated for best actor, motion picture, in “The Whale,” pledged never to return to the event after he alleged he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a former president of the group behind the show. Berk denies the allegation.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” took home the award for best picture, musical or comedy. It was the most nominated film at the Golden Globes, with eight nods.

Eddie Murphy gave the crowd some words of wisdom and advice for success after accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award
Eddie Murphy took a shot at the Oscar Slap and said “I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” Murphy said. “Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep’s Will Smith’s wife name out [your] mouth.”
Murphy was referring to the shocking moment during the Academy Awards last year when Smith hit Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Will Smith later apologized.
