AM34 had a stellar year and set a franchise record with 60 goals during the 2021-2022 regular season and won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP at the NHL Awards on Tuesday night in Tampa.
Auston Matthews is first Leafs player in 67 years to claim the Hart Trophy and the third in history along with Ted Kennedy (1954-55) and Babe Pratt (1943-44).
The 24-year-old was also the winner of the Rocket Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer after tallying 60 goals and 46 assists, for 106 points in 73 games.

Auston appreciated the incredible special night it was for him and his family at the 2022 NHL Awards on Tuesday winning the Hart Trophy, voted as the NHL most valuable player by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, and the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player in the League as voted by members of the NHL Players’ Association but being back at Amalie Arena to speak to the media afterward had Matthews thinking about what might have been for the Leafs this season as much as his individual achievements.
Matthews said “I always try to set goals and just try to be the best that I can be but I think I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little bit of, I guess, angst wishing you were still playing, obviously, right now. Especially being back here.”
The last time Matthews was in the building, THE BUDS had a chance to win their first Stanley Cup Playoff series win since 2004 but lost 4-3 in overtime in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference First Round. The Lightning won 2-1 in Game 7 in Toronto to eliminate the Leafs who have not won The Cup since 1967.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are the reigning back to back Stanley Cup Champions but lost the first two games of the Finals then took Game 3 at home. The Bolts will look to tie the series tonight against the Colorado Avalanche at the Amalie Arena in Tampa.
