Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit Confirms Flu-Related Deaths

WDG Public Health is confirming that the two reported deaths of children attending Westminster Woods Public School have been influenza B deaths. There is no evidence that the two cases are related. The influenza virus is widely circulating in Southwestern Ontario. A coroner’s report confirmed a 12-year-old girl from Guelph died as a result of influenza B.

“It is a tragedy for this community that two children died from the flu,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph. “It is important for parents to know that there is not a greater risk of contracting the flu at any particular location. It is circulating throughout our community. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has provided extra vaccines so we can vaccinate as many people as possible. If you have not had your flu shot visit Public Health, your doctor or a local pharmacy.”

Public Health is encouraging people to visit their local pharmacy or health care provider to get the flu shot. A special flu shot clinic has been set up at 160 Chancellors Way in Guelph on Monday, February 12 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Upper Grand District School Board says if your child is showing symptoms of the flu, please keep them home until they are well enough to attend school.
