Tensions are rising in the Middle East, where the top leader of the Islamic militant group ‘Hamas’ is calling for a new uprising against Israel in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Ismail Haniyeh spoke to followers in the Gaza Strip today and called the US decision regarding the disputed city an “aggression on our people and a war on our sanctuaries.” He says the uprising should begin Friday, the Muslim holy day. Hamas killed hundreds of Israelis during an armed uprising in the early 2000s.
Prime Minister Trudeau says Canada will keep its embassy in Tel Aviv, despite the Trump administration’s move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Speaking to reporters from his working visit to China, Trudeau said Canada has a long-standing policy in the Middle East to work toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestinians.
