TFC Has Officially Been Eliminated From Playoff Contention

Stick a fork in it TFC is done like dinner! That’s it that’s all she wrote my friends! With only 3 games to go Toronto has been mathematically eliminated with no chance to qualify for the playoffs 10 points behind Montreal. The 2017 MLS Champions lost 2-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps who still have a slim chance to make the playoffs and the Impact defeated Columbus Crew 3-0 Saturday. Montreal has two games remaining and lead DC by 5 points for the final playoff birth in the East Conference. Last year TFC won the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship and a league-record 69 points. It made the final of the CONCACAF Champions League and won the Canadian Championship again in 2018 but this season has been filled with frustration and disappointment for the team and fans. The last MLS champion that didn’t make the playoffs the following year was Portland who beat Columbus 2-1 in the 2015 MLS Cup then finished two points out of a playoff birth in 2016.  Toronto plays D.C. United, Montreal and the final regular season game against the league leading Atlanta United FC who could break TFC’s record for the most points in a season. They currently have 66 with two games remaining. After the game head coach Greg Vanney said “You have to go on runs over the course of a season to give yourself a chance. We never got that going this year.” Captain Michael Bradley said “We need to make sure the MLS part of this season was just a blip on the radar.” Jozy Altidore scored a goal in the losing effort against Vancouver said “Disappointed, angry… but there’s still something here. Now it matters how we bounce back next year.” The only good news is after three years of waiting for a call Sebastian Giovinco will join the Italian National Team for the first time since October 20-15 when the “Azzurri” host Ukraine in Genoa for a friendly match on Wednesday, October 10 then Poland for a UEFA Nations League match in Chorzów on Sunday, October 14. Giovinco is surprised and ecstatic at the same time and said “I’m very happy to be back with the national team, very happy. “I was surprised, to be honest, but I’ve done a good job here in Toronto and it’s always a pleasure to get called in. I can’t wait to get there.”
