Rogers Cup Semi Finals In Montreal: Go Shapovalov Go!

The fairy tale continues for Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill with a quarter finals victory over Adrian Mannarino Friday at the Rogers Cup men’s event in Montreal. He is the youngest player in ATP Masters 1000 to reach the semi finals ever and (Coupe) Rogers Cup Semi’s in Open Era. The win came less than 24 hours after a huge upset of first seeded tennis legend Rafael Nadal, which followed a second round win over 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro and a first-round victory over Rogerio Dutra Silva in which he needed to fight off four match points for the Brazilian. After facing several veterans, the 18 year old tennis sensation Shapovalov faces 20-year-old German Alexander Zverev, the fourth seed, in the semifinals at 8pm tonight. Shapovalov entered the tournament ranked 143rd in the world and could break the top 70 for reaching the semifinals. Shapo has the same current ranking as the lowest ranked ATP Masters 1000 Champion ever 1996 winner Robert Carretero. There’s talk talk of giving him a wild card entry into the U.S. Open at the end of the month due to his new ranking instead of trying his luck in the qualifying tournament. The other semi finals match is slated for 3pm today with second-seeded Swiss Superstar Roger Federer vs unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase.
