From October 2 to 6, 2017, Island Lake Public School hosted a group of 21 international students and three teachers visiting from China.
The entire school and Doug Morrell, the Superintendent of Education responsible for the International Student Program, welcomed the visiting students and staff at an assembly on October 2. The grade four to six students attended classes at the school for the week.
The Chinese students were buddied up with Island Lake students in their host classrooms to get a taste of school in Canada. Island Lake’s community welcomed visitors with open arms and made the most of the opportunity to meet, play with and learn about the visitors from China.
Two Island Lake teachers, Mr. Broderick and Ms. Laughton, hosted after-school activities in the gym. The week culminated in a celebration of culture on October 6th. All of the host classes and visitors shared in a pizza lunch, a talent show put on by the international students and an exchange of gifts.
Island Lake PS wants to thank Mr. Morrell, and his assistant, Anna Chen, for providing this opportunity for the school to establish global connections and promote inclusiveness.
