Hand In Hand Telethon Raised 14.5 Million In One Hour

$14.5 million was raised during the one hour telethon organized by Houston rapper Bun B and talent manager Scooter Braun in support of hurricane victims. The telethon took place in Nashville, San Antonio, New York City and Los Angeles. Stevie Wonder said “We’ve come together today to love on the people that have been devastated by the hurricanes. When love goes into action, it preferences no color of skin, no ethnicity, no religious beliefs, no sexual preferences, and no political persuasions. It just loves As we begin to love and value our planet… anyone who believes that there is no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent. Lord, please save us all.” Wonder kicked off the show with “Lean on Me” and Usher and Blake Shelton joined him for “Stand By Me.” Justin Bieber offered words of encouragement and a prayer, George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Al Pacino, Lupita Nyong’o, Jay Leno, Julia Robert, Oprah, Cher, Sofia Vergara, Justin Timberlake and many others celebrities made appearances. Beyonce, Will Smith and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sent in taped pleas for support during the event. Originally the telethon was to benefit victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas but will also assist people in Florida and the Caribbean devastated by Irma. Kevin Hart said “We’re here to raise money, lift some spirits,” said comic Kevin Hart, standing with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. “When tough times hit, this is who we are. We’re compassionate. We’re unstoppable.” Luis Fonsi and Tori Kelly sang “Hallelujah” and Dave Matthews picked his guitar from a studio above Times Square, and Darius Rucker, Brad Paisley, Demi Lovato and Cece Winans sang the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” Computer maker Michael Dell and his wife Susan pledged to match the first $10 million in donations Tuesday. They’ve given a total of $41 million to the Rebuild Texas Fund. Basketball star Chris Paul gave $20,000 and said the NBA Players Association would match donations of up to the same amount given by any NBA player. Announcing Apple’s promise to give $5 million, Stephen Colbert said it was coincidentally “also the price of the new iPhone.” Billy Crystal announced the tally of $14.5 million at the end of the show and said phone lines would be kept open, and viewers could also donate online.
