Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette To Be Named The Next Governor General

The Canadian Press is reporting that Canada’s next Governor General will be Montreal astronaut Julie Payette. The C.P. says Prime Minister Trudeau informed the Queen of his pick during his visit to Scotland last week and will make his choice public as early as today. Payette is 53-years old, speaks six languages, took part in two flights to the International Space Station and was the Canadian Space Agency’s chief astronaut between 2000 and 2007.  She is also an Order of Canada recipient. David Johnston’s term ends in September. He has served since October 1, 2010 after succeeding Michaëlle Jean.
